Cairns tip-toed around cyclone Fritz last week and we were lucky to recieve just the tail end of it which translates as a week of relentless rain, more like endless sheets of falling water. The boat didn't go out for the entire week wich left me and my close knit bunch of backpacker mates searching for those things we've put off for a rainy day. For me it meant taking up the guitar, with two Claptonesque roomates and bugger all else to do I had virtual round the clock intensive tutoring which had me progressing in leaps and bounds by the end of the week. We took a road trip to Airlie beach one day, 12 of us took off in 2 cars an a van on the pointless voyage which was the perfect start to reading Kerouac's classic "On the Road". In the past few weeks I have been perfecting the skill of following the 'Happy Hour' round town and can now manage to go on a whole nite out for free, using only collected drinks vouchers and an "I work in Cairns" card. I was more than happy to share this devine knowledge with Simon AKA Zimeoghhh when he showed up in town for a few days. Over the past few days the rain has subsided and the sun is back smiling again which means a return to my beloved reef and the gradual demise of my guitar playing. Now in true Cairns Laidback style I'm off to Layback by the pool and catch a few more of those rays.
